Idaho Float Trip Gear List

Idaho Float Trip Packing List:

Our outfitter for the Middle Fork Salmon River in Idaho provides everything you need for the trip, except for your personal items. However, it’s important to understand that you are responsible for certain aspects to ensure a successful journey. The two most important factors are: having a positive attitude and following the gear list provided below.

If you have specific items you would like to bring on the trip that are not included in the list, feel free to ask us about them.

 Here’s your Middle Fork Salmon River Packing List:

  • Good quality rain gear(pants and jacket w/hood) MANDATORY
  • Fleece jacket or equivalent MANDATORY
  • Wetsuits are MANDATORY when conditions dictate (we recommend reserving these well in advance. They can be picked up in Stanley the night before the trip. Wetsuit gloves can be nice as well.)
  • Polar Fleece Pants. (Recommended but optional)
  • River shoes:
    • June – wetsuit booties, sandals, or tennis shoes and wool socks.
    • July and August – sandals or tennis shoes.
  • Hikingand/or tennis shoes for camp
  • Sunglasseswith strap and a hat.
  • Sun screen, ChapStick, bug repellent, and hand lotion.
  • Two bathing suits and shorts made out of quick – drying material. (for women, 2-piece bathing suits work well.)
  • One pair of long pants (blue jeans).
  • Long Johns or sweats Underwear, socks, and light gloves.
  • Personal hygiene supplies include one roll of toilet paper, small bar of biodegradable soap, travel pack of Wet Ones.
  • Personal medications, allergy medications, reaction medication to insect stings and bites
  • Towel and washcloth
  • Small pillow
  • One large plastic garbage bag, three one-gallon Ziplock bags
  • 4’x8′ground cloth (for sleeping out under the stars)
  • Alcoholic beverages: You buy it, we’ll haul it. Please, no glass. We do serve wine with most dinners and margaritas on Mexican night.
  • Fishing gear
  • Small flashlight or headlamp with extra bulb and batteries
  • Camera with waterproof case, or your smartphone and solar battery charger or power bank. If you expect to do some fishing, a polarized lens is great for taking better fishing photos.
  • 20 ft. of cord for clothesline. 1 per couple or family, belt with knife and/or pocketknife (optional)
  • Optional – self filtering water bottle(we provide fresh water, juice, and pop throughout the day), book, pencil, paper, playing cards, compact binoculars, etc.
  • Blank check for guide tip.

Items Provided by the Outfitter:

  • Experienced guides and guidance.
  • 1 large dry bagfor your personal gear. Space is limited, but if you stick to the gear list above, there will be plenty of room.
  • 1 small dry container for a camera and other small items.
  • Life jacket.
  • Oar rafts, paddle raft, 1-man inflatable kayaks. (Depending on water level and group size.)
  • Chairs, tables, tents and sleeping pad.
  • Kitchen equipment and utensils.
  • Water purification system.
  • An abundance of good food.
  • Plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. (Pop, juice, etc.)
  • Your guides will provide all camp chores, set up/tear down of camp, cooking, dish washing, and raft navigation.
  • Transportation to Boundary Creek put in.
  • Transportation back to Stanley, Idaho from Cache Bar at the end of your float.
