Squaring A Bear Hide

Many people get confused about the correct way to square a bear hide after you’ve taken one.

These tips will help clarify the proper way to square your bear hide for all bears including black bear, grizzly bear, brown bear and polar bear.

          1) Measure the bear from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail.

          2) Measure the width across the shoulders from the tips of the claws.

          3) Be sure to take these measurements after skinning and fleshing, but BEFORE salting the hide.

          4) Add the numbers together, divde by 2, then square.

Example:

If you had a length of 73″ and a width of 75″, you would have 148″/2, or 74 feet.

Now convert this to squared feet.  74’/12 or 6.17 square feet.

While record books take the skull measurements, it’s always nice to see what your trophy squared.
