When Can You Hunt Alligators?
Alligator hunting seasons will typically start in the middle of August to the 1st few days in September – usually closing at the end of November. In a handful of states, such as Florida, you can hunt alligator all year long if you’re on private land. Still, as usual, you always have to be aware of the weather. You have to remember, alligators are cold-blooded, meaning they’re most active when the temperatures are in the 80 to 90 Fahrenheit (28-33 C) range. If the temperature drops below 80, they become less active. If temperatures drop to 55 F (13 C) or colder, this is when they become dormant.
Why Hunt Alligator?
Alligators are interesting creatures, they can cause humans to feel a wide range of emotions, the majority of them being negative. In short, we find reptiles both interesting and curious. Truth be told, that feeling is not mutual, the reptile brain has not developed to be responsible for complex emotions. Alligators are cold-blooded killers and won’t think twice attacking a human. While alligators are far less dangerous for humans than African crocodiles, fatal attacks on people happen almost every year. Hunting helps maintain fear of humans, and thus reduces the likelihood of human-alligator conflicts. In the past they have been, and in limited numbers still are, hunted for their valuable skin, and alligator meat forms an important part in the Southern cuisine. Harvesting an alligator is a challenging and exciting task, not without an element of danger, and it’s not surprising that many people want to experience it.
