There’s a number of different states where mountain lions can be hunted, such as Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Texas, and throughout Western Canada.
When Can You Mountain Lions?
Mountain lion season can start as early as August, and last until January or February. Some of the few states that believe they have an overpopulation of cougars may have an additional hunting season in the spring as well. When those mountain lion hunts are available, we’ll be sure to let you know. The length of the season can also depend on whether harvest quota have been met for the season. Mountain lion hunts often depend on the snow. It is more difficult to see the tracks on dry grounds, and only the best hounds and houndsmen can shot consistent success without snow. If snow cover is uncertain at the time, you may hear about on-call hunts, this is when a client will wait on an outfitter to give them the green light if hunting will be a good option.
Why Hunt Mountain Lions?
Out of all the felines in the world, mountain lions are the 4th largest in the world. That means they’re larger than leopards. Despite the size and increases in attacks on humans, the mostly shy cougar is not as dangerous as it’s made to be. This could be due to the fact that the pumas haven’t been around well-armed humans and sound hunters. To maintain the perception of people as not acceptable food, some degree of hunting pressure must be maintained. This concept is not easy to grasp for many people, because large felines raise a lot of emotions in humans. But this very fact ensures that hunting mountain lions, a time-honored tradition in the West, is also an extremely exciting (and very demanding physically) pursuit. Watching the hounds work and following mountain lions through rugged canyons is a one-of-a-kind experience.
